High Line ::

After a job interview, and quick Alias move of changing attire without going home whilst in SoHo, I decided to spend the rest of the daylight hours venturing to and enjoying the High Line park. I didn't know what to expect, only that it was once a rail line that NYC converted into a mile long park. It was amazing, the sun was out and cool breeze washed over us off the water. And of course, sans DSLR, I whipped out my iPhone for a bit of Instagramming :D Also, here's a brief history of the High Line dating back to 1847!

The Great Gatsby ::

Read the book in high school. Watched Robert Redford and Mia Farrow as Jay and Daisy oh so many years ago. And now, a modern adaptation graces the screen as Baz Luhrman's 5th full-length film. Strictly Ballroom was cute. My preteen self swooned over Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge! I don't quite really know how to handle but love anyways, and Australia took by breath away despite it's appalling reviews by critics. So it would be an understatement to say that I'm thrilled and excitedly awaiting his interpretation of The Great Gatsby. Let's just hope that HS students won't dump the book for whatever might come our way this December. After all, it truly is an American literary classic.

[movie] trailer tuesday ::

With the exception of the teaser trailer for Skyfall, it looks like there's a theme at play with these two 1930s era movies. Perhaps the days of prohibition and wanting to rise against the government is reminiscent of today's political and economic climate. Or maybe, like in fashion, the 1930s is the latest trend to hit Hollywood. Either way, I'm pumped for these three new films. I give you Gangster Squad, Skyfall and Lawless. Happy [movie] trailer tuesday!

15 Random Things I Like (so far) About New York ::

Img_4161

It's a been 20 days since I've left the plains of Kansas (because you know, there are only plains of wheat in Kansas) for the skyscrappers of New York, and while I am tired of hearing, "You're not in Kansas anymore!" I will say, I've become quite fond of a few random things.

1 :: There is always something to do. I have yet to see a play or musical (so badly want to see Death of a Salesman) but I have been to Brooklyn, Top of the Rock, Cafe Lalo (Youv'e Got Mail), and managed to work part-time right outside the gorgeous Lincoln Center.
2 :: Brooklyn's locally crafted beer: the Brooklyn Lager and the Brooklyn Summer Ale. Yums. Nothing can beat 312 though.
3 :: The accessibility of my beloved 312.
4 :: Celebrities. It weirds me out that no one reacts to celebrities walking freely about our midsts. It takes every ounce of will power not to go hurdling toward them, screaming their name, and asking for a picture. What stops me, honestly, is that I don't want to be the one that calls them out; the one that rips off the supposed invisibility cloak they're wearing and reveal them to the world. I hope Chris Rock comes by my retail joint (because he supposedly does) and secretly wish that I bump into Archie Panjabi or Juliana Marguiles at a near by Starubcks. However, I nearly paused in my tracks as Leiv Schreiber walked toward me, concentrating on his iPhone. He brushed by me, but inside, I was screaming his name.
5 :: Public transportation. The Subway and I have a love/hate relationship. I will delve further on this later.
6 :: Geographical assumptions. Every time I mention that I moved to Texas at the age of 8, everyone, literally everyone I've told this fact to has responded with, "Oh, so your dad's in oil?" Yes, because just like the plains of Kansas, oil is the only business Texas knows...and dad's are the breadwinners.
7 :: A Meet-cute is an actual possibility. Let's just say I know someone who met someone by bumping into them randomly in front of the holds section at the New York Public Library. One was searching for their copy of The Hunger Games while the other was finding their copy of Order of the Phoenix. Yes!
8 :: Accents. So many new accents to discover, identify and copy. I've accidentlly slipped into a British one while talking to a Brit. She caught me. Thank goodness she wasn't offended and found it "adorable."
9 :: Walking. I'm a walker and loving it. My shoes and feet, not so much. Thank goodness for having a discount at Piperlime.
10 :: Opportunity. I feel like anything, ANYTHING, is possible here. Even at my unpaid internship, where I can be found answering phones and plating food for clients, I was able to create a billing block for Mira Nair's new film.
11 :: Food. Next on my list is this Belgian place called Petite Abeille (Little Bee). Belgian beer and waffles? Yes please!
12 :: The Elevator in my building. A small window reminiscent of a submarine and Charlie's last words, "Not Penny's Boat."
13 :: Underground New York Public Library. I'm determined to get onto this blog. So far on the train I've finished the Steve Jobs biography and reread A Wrinkle in Time. Perhaps I'll take a cue from my brother and pick up Cry the Beloved Country next.
14 :: The fact that I pass a total of five movie theatres once I get off the subway and head into work. Haven't been able to see a movie yet.
15 :: My Roommates. Ok, so this one isn't random, but a huge shout out to Amanda and RLo for blessing me with this opportunity. Without you two, none of this would be happening :D
